Why does a parked car get so hot? Teachers learn the greenhouse effect through an everyday example, then learn to calculate sun angle for any day of the year, anywhere on Earth.
The Global Atmospheric Circulation and regional climates
Probably the most important diagram in Earth science, explained so you can teach it. Uneven heating, Earth's rotation, and the global pattern of winds and pressure that shape regional climates.
The role of air masses on weather in Michigan and elsewhere
Much of the unpredictability of Michigan's weather is attributable to air masses. Teachers gain the content mastery to teach MS-ESS2-5, and get introduced to the real-time weather data sources that make it concrete.
Köppen climate classification with grade-appropriate arithmetic
Students classify the world's climates using annual temperature and precipitation data and nothing more than addition, averages, ranges and decimals. Teachers learn the method behind Köppen's system and how to run it in class.
An introduction to the temperature profile of the atmosphere
Winter precipitation comes in a surprising number of forms, and each one tells us about the state of the atmosphere. Teachers learn to read a Stüve diagram and connect temperature profiles to what lands on the ground.
Each workshop runs two to three hours at a location you choose in your district. Dr. Lilienfeld brings the content, the real-time data sources, and packets of activity sheets for every participant to use during the workshop and afterward in their own classrooms. Continuing education credits (CEUs in Minnesota, SCECHs in Michigan) are awarded on completion.
Workshops are priced from $250 to $350 depending on the number of participants. Workshops 1 and 2 are designed to be taken in sequence, since the sun angle work in the first sets up the global circulation in the second, but every workshop stands on its own.
